Ever since the poem "The Man With the Hoe" her and her husband have read every poem Markham wrote; wants to build a wayside fountain in memory of her late husband and asks to have his poem "A Prayer" insribed; asks if whe could change the word oak to maple since it's under a maple tree.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
